Silicone Implants

The size and formation of the breasts represents a major aspect of feminity. Breast augmentation with the use of silicone breast implants represents one of the most basic cosmetic surgical procedures that can help improve the shape, size, and curvature of the breasts.

Silicon is a chemical compound predominantly found in sand. When mixed with hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen it forms into a heat-resistant rubbery substance known as silicone that offers great longevity when used in breast implants. The composition of silicon by volume with carbon and hydrogen determines the molecular weight in the formation of elastonomers, silicone gels, or silicone oil.

A silicone implant comprises an elastonomer shell or bag of single or double lumen that is filled with the same silicone in the form of a gel.

Shape and Size

The modern silicone implants come with double or triple layers of shell surrounding the silicone gel which reduces the amount of gel bleed. This helps in making the implants firmer than what they used to be a few years ago though some say this is because of the thicker shell. It can be put down more to personal choice and patients with silicone breast implants are often happy with the natural look and feel these provide. This happens to be one of the biggest benefits of using this type of implant. Also, the rippling effect that is so common with the saline implants is avoided in this case.

Silicone-gel breast implants are pre-filled so there is no need for any additional filler material to be added. The only drawback in this case is that the incision needs to be longer than in a saline implant and depends on the size of implant being used. This holds especially true for the textured silicone and gummy bear silicone implants which are firmer than usual. Another reason why textured silicone implants require a longer incision is because of the textured nature of the shell. Since the silicone gel breast implants are pre-filled, the TUBA incision cannot be used for inserting it just as it cannot be used for any other pre-filled implant.

Cohesive/Gummy Bear implants are the fifth generation of silicone implants, the latest in the series. These are usually referred to as gummy bear implants and come with a thick, consistent filling of silicone gel inside a thicker silicone shell. This is done mainly to overcome the possibility of leakage of the filling if the implant ever ruptures. Even if rupturing does take place, the thick gel remains consistent and does not leak into the body. This standard-sized implant provides a natural breast enhancement rather than breast enlargement.

Silicone implants come in round and teardrop shapes. The implant sizes are widely varying in this type of silicone implant. Be it a D cup, DD cup, C cup or larger, an implant is available to fit in with your breast shape.

Silicone breast implants come with a thick outer shell which significantly reduces the possibility of breakage as compared to saline implants. Thanks to the advancement in technology the structure of implants has become more durable than ever. The cohesive gel firmly holds down the silicone implants.

There are three methods to making the right kind of incision with the implant being placed through the nipple, armpits, or under the breast folds.
